NATURAL ATTRACTIONS

Crescent Head copyright Cartoscope

Take the track to impressive Korogoro Arch
and Cave at Hat Head. Check on tides before
you go as the cave floor is only accessible
at low tide. Arakoon State Recreation Reserve
features a circular walking track which passes
an historic powder magazine and an obelisk
before leading to views over Trial Bay Gaol.

To the north, at Pines Picnic area near
Mt Yarrahapinni, there are gigantic flooded
gums standing sentinel near a planting of
hoop pines. Seek out natural wonders throughout
the Macleay Valley Coast. The Visitors Information Centre
has detailed flyers which will help you explore.

Over 80% of the Macleay's coastline is
protected by national parks and reserves.
The coast features craggy headlands and
clear, aquamarine-tinted waters. Expansive
sandy beaches stretch to the horizon,
tempting the determined walker and avid
angler. Small secluded beaches, sheltered by
towering, Pandanus Palm-sprinkled cliffs,
are a haven from the crowds.

Take a walk along coastal bluffs and see
sea eagles soaring on thermal air currents.
Wetlands and unspoiled bush make the area
home to prolific bird life. Even the endangered
Jabiru shelters in the valley. Driving the forest roads, you might see kangaroos, wallabies,
goannas and water dragons. Keep your eyes
peeled for elusive echidnas and wombats.
For spectacular views, follow the Macleay
River’s twisting route west along
the Bellbrook road.

Natural wonders

Walk along the breakwater at South West Rocks
and you might spot dolphins searching for food.
If you’re observant during the whales’ migration seasons, June to July and September to October,
you might spot these majestic mammals from headland vantage points.
